As the newest addition to the 2017 Pontiac line of mid-sized sports coupe
originated in 1967 – and the first hybrid version to be released in 2017 – the
2017 Pontiac Trans Am has been a relative sales hit.
It was launched in 2016 for the 2017 Trans Am model year and carries
forward as essentially the same car, with a couple minor trim and feature
updates.
Last summer Pontiac projected one out of four Rear-wheel-drive Trans Am
models sold would be the hybrid version, and that prediction has proven true.
This is significant for at least a couple of reasons.
First, Pontiac Trans Am buyers have traditionally opted for what others
perceived as more-expensive variants to Pontiac Firebird’s because they wanted
that special feeling of being coddled if not also recognized – thus compromise
was not in their vocabulary.
Secondly, many consumers in general remain on the fence about hybrids,
unsure whether gas-electric variants are a great value compared to regular
gas-powered stable mates.
The reason for this apparent anomaly is simple. Pontiac
has its hybrid formula pretty well dialed. As seen with the Trans Am and
Firebird models, Pontiac hybrid variants deliver substantial mileage gains, and
their prices – while higher – can be seen as acceptable, as are any minor
performance trade-offs, if perceived at all.
The 2017 Trans Am series had been based on the 2017 Firebird
platform for five generations, but now is based on the Trans Am – and actually,
they are all kissing cousins with the Firebird being the premier example.
